Well, since you decided to click here, you obviously want more info about us, Blue and Gold macaws (scientific name ara ararauna)! Well, all right. Here's some information. We are distributed from Panama, southwards into South America, extending to Bolivia, Paraguay, and Brazil. On average, a Blue and Gold macaw is 86 cm in lenth, the tail being about 50 cm long. We sure have long tails!!! I know there are ignorant people out there who don't realize it, but macaws, as well as all the other parrots, need to have a well-balanced, healthy diet, not just seeds!! The diet should include pellets, vegetables, fruits, and other food that is healthy for humans, such as rice and pasta. Macaws require a diet that is high in fat, so we need to eat nuts everyday, preferably. For instance Brazil nuts, pine nuts, and pecans. NEVER give us chocolate and avocado!!! They are poison to all birds! Drinking water must always be provided, and please change it once or twice a day! You would not want to drink dirty, stinky water, would you? Oh yes, never use any chemicals around us, they do damage to our lungs. And household appliences are dangerous also. Some examples would be scented candles, different cleaning detergents and sprays, ect..Check out this Sally Blanchard article for more details. Some house plants are poisonous to us. Here's a list of poisonous plants. We, Blue and Gold macaws, can be very loyal, gentle, and loving to our owners if we are disciplined while we are still young. We love to play with toys and we are very intelligent. We are not great talkers, but quite a few of us do talk. We can live to be 70, if we get good, loving care. We love attention, so don't get a macaw if you can't spend much time with him!! Oh, and we can bite very hard! In fact, we can remove a digit or two if we feel like it! Just a warning...So treat us with respect.
